Malaysian lean experience
ukfirst Master Engineer, Bruce Lovell recently led a specially designed training course for representatives of WISDEC (Wood Industry Skills Development Centre).
WISDEC is a Malaysian based organisation that aims to transform the Malaysian wood-based industry into a major resource and act as a reputable centre for high quality wood products. In order to gain extensive manufacturing knowledge from the UK furniture industry, the group attended a 5 day ukfirst course to “Train the Trainer” and learn a variety of tools and techniques on lean manufacturing.
The WISDEC team were provided with a wealth of knowledge on a variety of lean teach points including, practical waste reduction, value stream mapping and workplace organisation. The team were encouraged to identify the typical day to day problems that could be faced in a woodworking company and using the concept of the 7 wastes, complete action plans on how to reduce waste.
The group were also given the opportunity to go on a factory tour of Burbidge, a manufacturer of high quality furniture and see elements of their lean journey first hand. The entire group were extremely impressed with the factories operations and commented that "the management's support of the workforce in their lean journey was very good".
