Ryder Best Practise Visit Huge Success

Continuing its programme to disseminate best practice through the industry, UkfirstÆs latest visit was to see the logistics and supply chain management operation of Ryder in action.  The aim was to demonstrate how best practice delivers a world class service which stands out from the competition.

The visit took place at one of RyderÆs customerÆs sites û Premdor, who manufactures and distributes doors, windows and cubicles. Premdor has five sites throughout the UK and has a nine year relationship with Ryder. The visit included a presentation by key Ryder personnel who explained the processes behind their success. A highlight was hearing from RyderÆs on site operations manager Mark Saville who then led a tour of the plant to demonstrate how closely Ryder and Premdor work together.

Ryder has been in the UK since 1971 and attributes its successful growth to customer commitment and quality of personnel. The latter was highlighted in the Q&A session when Saville emphasised the time and care devoted to staff recruitment and training. Each new recruit receives a weekÆs training not only in his or her specific job but also in the Ryder culture and the customer service level expected.

This best practice is continued with regards to its two man home delivery operations; by matching drivers with their partners to ensure compatibility rather than simply pairing any two individuals. This not only makes a more pleasant working environment but also ensures optimum efficiency so that the end customer receives the highest level of service.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are used to measure quality, cost, delivery and health & safety continuously. Saville stresses that for KPIs to be successful they must be sufficiently detailed to tackle root causes and all parties must be fully committed to them for maximum benefit.

The routing and scheduling software used by Ryder allows Premdor to input all load and delivery information. Ryder then produces delivery schedules and pick tickets.

The visit to Premdor was rated a great success û showing delegates not only why Ryder is so good at what it does but also how the company integrates with its customersÆ businesses on a daily basis.
