Successful visit to Jaguar/Land Rover

ukfirst took forty business owners and Chief Executives to the Jaguar/Land Rover operations plant in Halewood, Merseyside this month.  Part of ukfirst’s best practice programme, the visit demonstrated automotive best practice and showed how the company has transformed its business using Lean Manufacturing techniques which could be transferred to the furniture sector.   Sponsored by Ryder, who delivered an extremely informative session on logistics, the visit enabled delegates to see some very visible lean improvements that had been made in the plant.

ukfirst Master Engineer Bruce Lovell said: “Our delegates saw first hand how the material handling, moving and presentation process was arranged, how the equipment and supported toolings operated and how the factory layout and workflow organisation delivered a very sleek and balanced production process.  Particularly noticeable was the effort that the company puts into display boards for the workers, tackling not just machine performance and stoppage issues but people issues too.”

ukfirst arranges a series of best practice visits throughout the year and will also provide a free diagnostic meeting to any furniture and timber industry related manufacturers who are interested in exploring the impact lean manufacturing could have upon their business.
